Anybody have a 700 with the 16.5 inch barrel in 308 I'm looking for feed back on one before I buy it'll either be that or an ltr I'm undecided thanks
 
I also love short guns but just realize what you are giving up in ballistics. Don't get me wrong, my 16.5 inch 308 will shoot better at distance than most people have the skill for but there is always a trade off either way you go. Just don't expect a 1000 yard gun or to hunt at extended range. The short barrel is very handy though and the gun is a blast to shoot.
 
I deer hunt with a 16" .308 (albeit in a different platform). I shot deer at 200 and 240 yards last year no problem. Just realize that you'll need to keep a little better eye on your trajectory with the lower velocities.

I cut the barrel on my 308 to 16.5 iirc and threaded it for a silencer, still shoots great.. oh. It's a ruger American, not a 700
 
Noise level is the main reason I avoid those short barrels. A 20 or 22 inch is not overly long to the point that they affect handling. I have a couple rifles with 26" bbls and they definitely affect it. They tend to hang everything within a mile it seems sometimes. :)

My 700 is a 20" barrel. I think it is a great balaance between length and performance. Plus, with the suppressor added, it isn't too long, either.
