Smokeless remington 700 conversion question

what are the advantages if any for using a rifle action vs a ml action


im thinking i want to build one off a rifle action

Generally when people build off a center fire action they use modified rifle cases with large rifle primers and a Pete's plug for ignition rather than a 209 primer (using a Hunter's bolt nose kit) and a regular Savage breech plug. All the pressure is on the bore side of the breech plug so the locking lugs of the center fire actions arent needed.

Only advantage I can see is it would be easier to set the head space on the center fire action since all you would be doing would be fine tuning the length of your cases rather than modifying the breech plug.

I personally think the advantage goes to the 700ML muzzleloader action. The ML action is much stiffer because it does not have the action feeding cutout. Add to that the easier conversion and it's a no-brainer.

are standard 700 triggers interchangeable

Triggers are the same but the bolt stop on a regular 700 trigger isn't needed. ML actions use a bolt on the side of the receiver for a bolt stop/raceway.

Just about everything is interchangeable with a short action 700.

Exception being the bolt.

Serval reason the Rem 700 ML is superior IMO
the two that come right to mind is the ease of replacement
breech plugs and primers. The Rem 700 rifle primer
consist of rifle casing cut down to the same size and reprimed
after each shot. And you can't go to walmart if you forget them.

that may be but you cant go to wal mart and buy cci 209's either

Depends on condition and whether its ss or blue...
Build you a SML and be done with it.

Its blued but in good shape, the bolt striker face shows some wear. But I wouldn't think that wouldn't matter since that would be replaced when building a smokeless. Factory camo stock which would probably go in the can with a build. Anyway I bought this gun a couple years ago and stuck it in the closet.

having built both I prefer the ML action, there have been MANY issues with flame cutting of cases and plugs on the cf guns. yes the ML action is not only stiffer but also has much longer barrel threads, almost an inch (1.80 vs .900 os so)

209 primers are much easier to deal with in the long run and the whole deal works VERY well. I have built well over 60 of the ML actions in the last three years and no complaints yet...

i have found my action i think i will go with the ml action and been talking to luke
he has a pacnor 26.5 i was wanting 27 but 26.5 will work

that is penty long, most of my builds these days are 23-25"
