short answer (there are exceptions) is:
7.62x51 in a 308 chamber is ok
308 in a 7.62x51 chamber is not

Chances are you are not going to get much in the way of accuracy with anything marked 7.62x51 commercially loaded.

i thought it was the other way around 308 in 7.62 but you shouldnt put 7.62 in 308????

i thought it was the other way around 308 in 7.62 but you shouldnt put 7.62 in 308????

.308 is loaded to a higher pressure than 7.62x51. Just the opposite of .223 and 5.56.
 
but the cartridge is longer on the 7.62 so the chamber is bigger allowing for room to expand right, so why would the 308 not work in the 7.62??? i have read that article from above but i am not getting it. i need it dumbed down a little.
