So correct me if I am wrong.. When big game is NOT in season it is ILLEGAL to hunt coyotes with a riffle on WMA's? I dont get it. The populations are way to high, yet TWRA wants us to hunt them with one arm tied behind our back. Doesnt make sense..

Coyotes are considered small game in the reg book pg 18 and on pg 19 it says that on WMA'S if small games seasons are open then you can hunt yotes of course unless it is otherwise specified so it would be best to contact a TWRA officer in the county that the WMA is in just to make 100% sure. hope this helps. but you have to use the proper equipment.

Hmmm....with deer season ending shortly, I'll be trying my luck at coyote hunting. Guess I'll have to put the .308 away and break out the ole .22lr for them yotes.

Then you(anybody) could be considered to be hunting deer everytime you take a rifle out to the range to sight it in-especially if it is on your property. It is sort of like saying you are on your way to rob a bank when you get in the truck to go to work. Poachers are going to kill deer or whatever they want whenever they want. Just because I have a centerfire rifle doesn't mean I am hunting deer or hunting anything really. PH

I would keep the .308. You would be doing yourself a great disservice in using a .22lr over a .308. Don't buy into the whole overkill thing. It is a bigger myth than global warming.

I believe you're right Knightrider, no centerfires after deer season on WMA's. On private land it's ok. I'm with you PH... if someone is going to break the law... I don't think another law is going to prevent it...?? Not real logical on TWRA's part is it? Only restricts folks from making ethical kills on coyotes IMO. Another thing is coyote season is open year around but you can't hunt on a WMA unless another season is open.... thought coyote was "open season".. as in "year around"???

I'd like to but I hunt wma's and .308 isn't approved for small game season. I don't make the rules, until I can afford to get my own land then it's small game weapons for me and a .22lr is what I have for small game.

The WMA rule on firearms makes sense to me.

In the LBL they also do not allow centerfire rifles at any time except the draw gun hunts and the shooting range but for that you have to call ahead of time to set up a range time.

LBL does have a open season on coyotes durning the month of Feb and you can use the centerfire rifles then. Two reasons for that, it's a great time to be hunting coyotes and by then 99% the bucks will have shed their antlers. In all these years I've been hunting LBL I've never heard of anyone shooting a anterless deer in Feb in LBL. Take the racks off the deer and there is little chance of poaching.

If you dont want to tote rimfire or shotgun on WMAs and want something a little bigger then think about your muzzleloader. You wont be able to shoot as quick but youre packing more punch to get the job done. Check the regs out for small game hunting, muzzleloaders are legal without any size restrictions.

As the regulations say, muzzleloader are legal for smallgame. Coyotes are smallgame.
