If the line on my bait caster is piling up on one side it means I need a new paw(sp?) correct?

Make sure that the little round thing on the roller up top that goes back and forth is tight. Turn it like a screw to tighten.

You are correct, it's usually the pawl. Depending on age of the reel it may be a good idea to replace the worm gear also.
