It doesn't matter how big a magnum a scope can handle, if it's not airgun rated then it won't last long on an air rifle unless it's a PCP air rifle. Even airgun rated scopes will fail at times.

In my experience, a good quality scope will withstand the recoil of springers. I'm not sure about piston rifles.
15 years ago, after destroying 4 air rifle scopes, I put a Brush & Lomb Elite 3200 on my Gamo .177. It's still on it and I've shot at least 200 rounds a month since with no problems.
