Red Dot Scope?

You guys that use a red dot, do you turn the think on when you load your gun for a hunt or wait until your setting up on a bird?

This will be my first season using a red dot (ffiii). I don't want to get in a situation were a bird is standing at the end of my barrel and my sight isn't turned on.

This is my first year hunting with FFIII as well. Last Sunday in MS, I waited until I had birds responding to my call and got a sense of where they were. Unfortunately I didn't cash in. The birds stayed flocked up in a large group.
