I've managed to get my first MZ deer which was my first Public Land deer as well. I grew up in Hawaii, and this is only my second season having started last year "After the Rut".

I've searched here for recommendations, and other than "Mapping Trophy Bucks"......is there a dfinintive book on White-tail Biology for Hunters? I grew up in Hawaii, and except for the broad expertise I get lurking on here, I really don't know that much about Deer.

I thought I'd seen something, but search results on the forum yield very little.

A good place to start would be to Google Karl Miller (Researcher at UGA). You can learn a lot (and unlearn some myths) from reading some of his research papers.

There probably is a single place depository for his work, but i'm not sure where.

Google "Karl Miller White Papers" as a jump-off point. There are 2 really good good papers on whitetail scent communication and one amazing paper on deer vision on the first page of search results.

American Whitetail: Deer Hunting Tips and Resources, Everything You Need to Know about Whitetail Deer Hunting by Terry Townsend was a good read for me. He's from Tennessee (Maury Cty, I believe). I don't know that there's anything definitive out there. I had to self-teach, and I've found that being an information "hunter/gatherer" is not only best, but it's about all you can do. This forum has been a huge help, along with time in the woods.

I used to subscribe to "Deer and Deer Hunting" magazine and found it very insightful. However, this forum is an excellent source of information.

Did you ever hunt the axis deer in Hawaii? I got a nice buck on Molokai. It was probably the best hunt I've ever done. They are such awesome animals and are absolutely delicious. Great turkey hunting in Hawaii, too. I don't think many people know that Hawaii has some really cool hunting.

Sorry to change the subject, but your post got me thinking about the incredible hunts I've had out there. I never caught a marlin, though. We fished on Northern Lights out of Kona a few times. We caught some big ahi, but the marlin never cooperated with us.

Check out this book. The author can be a little annoying at times with his bravado, but lots of good information in this little book.
