I'am sure a 300 or 7mag are great for putting the bull Moose on his arse(but which my cousin dropped his in his tracks with a .308) but not whitetail. I killed a 160lb buck Thanksgiving morning with a 30-06 and 150gr. federal with a single shot to the neck @ 80 yards. The damage was EXTENSIVE. I should have took a pic. I Could not imagine needing anything more, and I;am honestly considering using my .243 the rest of the season.

Same situation with 44 mags... I can load slow 300 grainers and the gun rolls in my hand and is quite comfortable to shoot, but take 250 grainers at a higher velocity and your hand is stinging from the sharpness of the recoil.

that all depends on the cartridge. recoil increases as a square of the velocity and bullet weight. there are cartridges where the recoil velocity is greater with a lighter bullet....

Anyhoos, you can't simply take recoil energy in ft-lbs and make an absolute translation into 'felt recoil' If that were the case, my cousin's 416-06 JDJ with 400 grainers at 2000 fps (in a pistol, no less!!!) would remove your hand after the hammer drops. It generates well over 50 ft-lbs in the pistol configuration.
