Reading the wind

I'm new to the long range shooting matches and was hoping to get some tips on reading or I should say shooting in wind. I know about bracketing and reading mirage etc. But if anyone has any tips on how they shoot in wind during matches I'd love to hear them.

Mr. Big explained how he had wind flags up at x yards and then more flags at various yardages.

I don't know but would wager some flags wave at 10 MPH and others at 15 and stuff like that. so you see a flag waving and you look at the environment and get to know what X mph wind looks like. Then you have to somehow recognize 10 from 15 and adjust appropriately. In a real field with plants and grasses you might get a fair idea but on a mowed 1,000 yard course I don't know what you would do.

Thanks DaveB. I do shoot a 300 win mag just not in these matches. FTR only allows .223 or .308. There are flags up and down both sides of the range so those do help. I was just wondering whether I should just try and dope the wind for each shot or wait for similar wind conditions during the match. I've heard people doing both.

The only good way I would know how to learn to deal with the wind is to shoot in it, a lot lol ,changing any thing in your setup will change every thing when you start poking way out there. Bad thing around here its never a steady blow from 1 direction. It would be a lot of fun watching some matches with some good wind going it would show who really can shoot :tu:

Your right on Mike243, wind is the Xfactor in these matches. A gust of wind can move your bullet a foot easily at 600 yards so reading the wind is essential. You could be shooting 10's or X's and drop a 7 on your next shot.

Shot a 300 meter UBR match today and saw guys shooting 11s hang a 5 or 6 ..I struggled with the mirage a lot worse than the wind today.....

I forgot the old rule of never shoot in a boil..

I shot in a MRP match a couple weeks ago at 600 yds and something that helped me was to bracket the wind. I used my strelok pro ap to calculate the wind adjustment for the high and low wind conditions. The difference was only 1 MOA so I split the difference and shot when the wind was neither high or low. I ended up 3rd but because I shot two 8's that were bad reloads. They fit tight and were fliers. Another lesson learned. Don't shoot tight rounds!
