As I said in an earlier post, today was the only day that we were guaranteed to get to hunt due to travel ball commitments. We got settled in and immediately heard several far away birds gobbling. We agreed to be patient and see if we could talk one into coming our way. A lone hen came in and put on a show trashing our decoy, so we let her walk off and slipped out to set it back up. Shortly after, a bird had closed the distance a bit. We heard him make a large circle and then seemed to be coming our way. 10 minutes later and we see a head pop up, and then a second one appears. Both nice gobblers that began to strut toward us. Raylan got into the gun and waited until they were inside of 30 yards where they stayed so close together that we were afraid to shoot. One finally decided to demolish our Jake decoy while the other showed off for our hens. After several "Shoot!" "No wait!" "Now shoot!" " Wait!" sequences, he put a great shot on a nice gobbler at 28 yds with a Tristar Viper G2 20 gauge. We were truly blessed and our morning prayer was answered. 10.25" beard, 1 1/8" spurs, and weighed 23.5 lbs. Great day and great bird!
Congratulations to all who were able to enjoy the outdoors this morning!
