Rattling

Who has had success rattling and what part of the state, and what time of year was it?

I've been successful several times by using rattling horns in the Middle part and Eastern part of the state. Best time for me has been the first couple of weeks of bow season. My technique is not really "rattling" but just "tickeling" the antlers together. I've had my best luck when Bucks are still in bachelor groups.

I rattled at a group of does last year in the early weeks of bow season just to see their reaction. We werent hunting just hanging out trying to figure stuff out.They just took off running. Lol

I've rattled in a few bucks here in SW Tn over the years. I suspect more bucks than I know. Because of the type cover we have you may have one respond but never break cover. I've tried rattling during different seasons but I've generally had better luck just before and after the rut started than at any other time. As far as I know I haven't lured any in just tickling the tines together but rather all out war.

I rattled one in that I saw and he stayed deep into the thick stuff about 70 yards out and never gave me a good look. That was the last day of bow season before muzzle loader. I have seen a couple deer come in to a snort wheeze in early season.

one of the best hunts i ever had was on November 7th.....in west Carroll County. we got into the stand around 2-2:30 pm. I was in the stand 15 minutes and a doe comes by trotting. shortly after a small spike. they run parallel with the leeward side of the hillside in the woods just above the drainage ditch. I could watch them for about 120 yards before they were not visible through the woods...5 minutes later i could catch faint glimpses of deer running in circles down that way in the woods. there was a thick thick cedar patch above me that i presumed were holding a bunch of deer....I decided to rattle to potentially bring a buck out. I hit the horns for a 60 second session and then hung them up....less than 5 minutes a great looking 2 yr old steps out then another deer steps out and bristles up at the 7 pt. then they begin running after each other toward the deer 120 yds away dogging that doe. 3 minutes later another buck steps out, a 4 point, he catches the commotion that taking place 120 yds down the drainage and heads that way. before he got out of sight another spike steps out of the thicket. it was crazy day and from 3pm to dark i didnt go 5 minutes without seeing rutting action....no shooters showed themselves but it was something special to see.

That's worth the price of admission. It's all the things that happen in between actually shooting that make for the memories of the hunt.

I try it every yr at different times thru season, no luck really but I have a lot of reactions from grunt call. Firm believer in both tho

I've started incorporating an estrous bleat before sitting down once I get settled in. In 2014 I climbed up a tree and got settled in at 3pm well I decided to do a series of estrous bleats then sat down. At 3:05 I had a buck coming right at me fast. At 3:10 I released my arrow at 10 yds and was done with the hunt. This was Nov. 15th....now I do it everytime from Nov 8th on.

I've had moderate success but I still do it just not as much .
