Last two hunts it has worked.
Granted it usually doesn't. Maybe it's just the spot I am hunting but I'm impressed.
Though there is a downside to it working.... they seem to know exactly where u are before you know where they are. It would be a lot cooler with a gun. Lol
 
Ya be ready. I had one run straight to me opening ML a few years ago. I hit the horns right at daylight in the woods. He must of been bedded down beside me cause as soon as I set them down I looked up and there he was. I looked through the scope and all I saw was fur he was so close. And I was sittin on the ground.
 
I never really did a lot of rattling until a few years ago. My brother had been telling me for years how well it worked for him and that I should try it. The key is knowing how to rattle! In my opinion, you can rattle too aggressively or too mildly. I sat with him on several hunts and listened to how he did it and then I started trying it while I was in the woods. I started having some luck with it and have kept on practicing with some good success. Last year on November 16th, we got to the stand around 8:30 due to heavy rain and once I sat down it was drizzling so I started a rattle sequence. Not 10 minutes later, my top hit list buck came running in and I let the smoke pole eat. I am now a true believer. I rarely rattle as hard and loud as I can. Most of the time I just do a medium rattle. Gotta keep trying new things. You never know what will show up during the rut.
 
First buck I ever killed my dad rattled up on the juvi hunt several years ago.

I rattled in an 11 pt and killed it last year. Joker charged in 25 yards before I knew it and busted me. Didn't get to shoot him until he was at about 125 yards lol.
 
Yep ive rattled in 3 small bucks this year at first light

I usually do a grunt sequence and then wait 5 minutes. If nothing shows, then I will do a rattle sequence. I think it is better to rattle from the ground. I get on my knees so I can rustle the leaves with my feet and kick the ground with my boots. If I'm hunting a ladder stand. I have climbed down to rattle, then climbed back up to watch. If you are hunting flat land, and you rattle from 16-20' up, the deer know something isn't right, IMO.

Yes most of the time myngrunt call is in my mouth when I rattle.
Give cpl short grunts at the same time
 
I have used the same ole woods wise rattling bag for 25 years.. something happened to it last year and I have not found it yet.. lol.. it's funny.. I like to rattle when I see bucks to get their reaction.. sometimes they come in, sometimes they run off.. even with a gentle rattle and sometimes they completely ignore it..
 
I rattled in 3 bucks last weekend; my 6 year old son killed his first buck... 3 year old 10 pt.

After years of unsuccessful attempts, it worked when it truly counted... hunting with my boy. He later said, "Dad, your the best deer caller ever." Awesome memory indeed.

2 years ago I had a doe that wouldn't stop blowing and I tried everything but shooting her to get her to leave. I finally started rattleling. She left as planned and I turned to put the horns up and big daddy was running the opposite way about 50 yds away. He saw me moving and I never got a shot. Opening day of muzzleloader
 
We rattled and bleat called on Juvy last week. Called in a 3 inch spike and then another that busted us.
 
I've been really successful in the past rattling in the mornings but it's never worked in a evening. Anybody ever made it work in the afternoons?
 
Yes I killed one of my biggest bucks rattling in the evening. With that being said, that's the only time it worked fir me in the afternoon. DISCLAIMER: it had been 15-20 minutes after I had rattled so I guess it's possible that he wasn't coming to the rattling but I truly believe he was

All of the rattling(and hunting) I've done has been afternoons so far this season.
Rattling is mainly luck and I believe works best i areas with high buck to doe ratios.

i have always used a rattle bag because they are small and easy to carry. I can't say I've had a ton of success but I have rattled in 4-5 deer over the years. I guess that's not too bad considering I only try a couple times a year

I have several sets of antlers and a few mechanical devices as well. I've rattled in bucks with the mechs but overall I don't like the sound of them. They just sound too "tinny" to me. The size of the rack will make a difference in the tone of the sound. A 150" heavy beamed rack will sound deeper than a 110" thin rack. Often times bucks will respond out of curiousity but the response you're looking for is a buck charging in to kick some upstart that's dared not only to invade HIS territory but to have the audacity to be fighting showing his dominance. For that reason I like using a 120-125" rack for rattling. Not too small and not big enough to be too intimidating. The only thing I might try different is based on the mechanical black rack. Each of the 2 pieces you use is actually the entire rack rather than just one side. You want to sound realistic and you can't get more realistic than rattling an entire rack against an entire rack.

I've used sheds with the brow tines cut off to protect my thumbs. During the youth weekend, I used the compact Knight & Hale Pack-Rack. I attempted so sound like two bucks standing in a field lightly sparing, not a full on fight.
