Did some range time the other day and thought I would share some info.
Missions #1:
To take the 338-06 out to test some Imr 4350 hand loads shooting the Hornady 200 gr SST, and the Sierra Game King 215 gr all with cci 200 lr primers.
Mission #2:
Between 3338-06 testing see how the 50 cal ML does with the new 350 gr Hornady FPB's compared to my current load the 290 gr Knight Ult. Slam blue polymer tipped Barnes.
All work was done at 50 yds, approx. 80 degrees
The sst's were good at the very bottom, and very top loads, 59 grains to 61.5 gr with approx 1" groups with no high pressure signs. The GK shined with a 1 hole group @ 59.5 gr. The same 4350 grain weight I found to be my most accurate load (5 shot 1 hole group @ 100) with my 270 wsm shooting 130 gainers. Wonderful I found accuracy at the lower end so I can change components without working up again, just my cup of tea.
The GK load I will test next with 5 rounds each @ 100 yds with cci 200, win mag, and large pistol primers> (primer shortage backup) at different seating depths. Incidentally the GK's have a great ballistic coefficient.
The Hornady FPB's shot pretty good, some touching, but were (from the bull) shooting horizontal groups. Low 3" and to left at approx 4" compared to the Barnes that shot center, all vertical, 3" high, and tighter. All shots were loaded with 90 gr loose Pyrodex, cleaning between every 3rd shot. I will stick with the Barnes and try 10 grain increments up to 130 gr to see if I can tighten them up a little better. Them Barnes are also very good at killing. :grin:
