Rain and scent

How does rain affect your scent travel? I know that moist conditions will leave a better scent trail where you walked, but what about sitting up in a tree while it's raining? Will your scent still blow with the wind like usual, or will it be carried down faster, or will it be diluted by the rain or what?

I will try to find the field and stream article about it, I read it a year or two ago and it was very informative and they used a police dog to check the scents, it was a good read.

I have always been taught that wet conditions help with scent in a way washes it away.. Idk if that's true as far as with the wind I would still play it but that's is a interesting question for sure. I know I never ever ever pass up a chance to hunt in rain before during and after them I see historicaly big deer the most during one of those three periods the nasty weather is welcome by me.

that's what I was afraid of, I'm more concerned with the deer smelling me sitting there

To me the rain washes away your scent.If you were to go hunting after the rain and the ground is still wet,then you leave alot of scent.Ever notice when walking to your stand in the mornings,with dew covered everything,that a deer picks up on that scent better than say dried out ground.The same with dogs.That moisture holds scent pretty well.

Hope I'm not off the subject to much but I've always found it hard to believe that the average rain washes away all of your scent in the woods especially under a thick canopy. Dilute it some, maybe.

Diluted is weakened. Weakened is better than full strength. While it's raining your scent is most likely carried groundward and diluted. Damp air after a rain probably retains your scent more so than drier air so your scent stream may be stronger.
