Man, that's about awesome! I'd love to just watch that sucker in action.

While I think it's awesome that you can train these birds, as a die hard beagler and rabbit Hunter(year round not just when deer season is over lol) this is kind of hard to look at. If you get the rabbit and meat then more power to you and I say wear the rabbits out! If this is just for the hawk to eat and you don't get rabbits then thats different for me. Its bad enough these things are wiping rabbits out in the wild now we gotta deal with trained ones. Nobody would like coyotes being trapped and sent after deer or turkey. Maybe I just need to do some more research on the subject I don't know a whole whole lot about it.
Kind of on the fence with this I truly hope you don't think I'm being negative just not sure what to think about it.
No matter what you obviously had a successful hunt and a fun one also so I say congrats!! I'm half sick and these 75 degree temps made me stay in this weekend. I trained all spring and summer in the heat, Im sick of it lol. I'm going to get after them Tuesday though hopefully!

I'd say your right, I know some guys who slaughter rabbits when they go out with or without dogs Jump shooting etc. I guess I just see the pic and the bird not looking like he's gonna share so I Just wondered who got the meat after the kill lol. If the bird kills it and let's you have it or decide who has it afterwards then definitely cool!

Number of dogs really depends on the size of the area we are hunting. Could be one for a tiny area and up 5 or 6 for the large tracts.

Mudcreek as you know I hunt with beagles to. I'm not as die heart as you I know, but just guessing I think it would be harder finding rabbits with a hawk than a beagle, they don't just hoop around in open fields they hold up and hide so the hawk would have to see them to catch them where dogs smell um out and find them in the thick stuff where they are hiding to stay away from hawks.I've seen wild hawks which I hate and wish I could kill because of my chickens circle the fields around the house and fly away then 10mins later let the dogs out and they jump rabbits.anyway I think it would be cool to have a trained hawk,congrats showmehorns I would like to see it in person but maybe video it sometime and share it with us.
I would assume hunting with beagles and a hawk the dogs jump the rabbit and while their running the hawk starts after it right? Surely the hawk doesn't jump it for the dogs lol. I never said this is easier I just equate it(kind of)to how I said earlier. If people were trapping predators to deer(while deer numbers and places to hunt them were decling) and sending them after deer people would be iffy about that too. Ill go as far to say they would raise 7 different kinds of h*ll!! At least the ones who dedicate lots of time to the sport would. Look at the Cain they raise over a stray dog lol.
Not trying to sound against what he's doing just not as gung ho about it as some might be yet and that's mainly because of not knowing a whole lot about it but I assure you his training ability or how hard it is has nothing to do with the point I tried making. Again I'll say: to me the bigger "issue" -hate to use that word here lol- would be if the hawk was killing 10+ rabbits a trip and showmehorns didn't care about the meat it was just hawk food to him. He seems passionate about what he does and seems to do it for the right reasons and I respect that! I too would probably tag along and would love to record a hunt, I'd video for him it would be cool for sure.
Has the Hawk ever bothered the dogs or have you ever heard of it happening? Do you run a faster or slower type of dog ?

I did not know they use dogs to flush them out for the hawk,I thought it just flew and circled around til it seen one,like wild hawks,shows how little I know.

I still think this is totally awesome. For others that think this will hinder rabbit hunting I don't foresee enough people having the skill set to accomplish this training. My hat is off to anyone who can train a bird of prey to assist in a hunt, really cool in my book. Just because someone does something different doesn't make it wrong or bad.

I used to do a lot of rabbit hunting with dogs. On several occasions when the rabbits were in standing cotton stalk fields and a ways ahead of the dogs I'd have hawks diving down trying to catch the rabbits. I never saw one trying to do that anywhere else but those cotton fields.
