Hi everybody! I'm new to this site, and new to rabbit hunting. I hunt with 2 beagles on public land. I'm trying to soak up all the knowledge that I can. Maybe ya'll could answer a question for me- How far away from me should my dogs be working? close, faraway, etc. Should they check in? or is it up to me to keep up with them? Any help is appreciated.

I usually walk towards good looking spots and my dogs stay close.When I get to the spot i stop and let the dogs hunt.then i move to another spot.The dogs usually stay close but if they get to far away they will usually come to me if i yell as long as they are not on a rabbit.
I like some short range and some medium range in a pack. At a minimum we will have half a dozen dogs. Like a few close in case one of the hunters jumps one and a few out working to the sides and front trying to jump on their own.I never heard of folks taking any fewer dogs than that until I got on here. We have taken as many as 25 dogs on a hunt, have 3 or 4 races going at the same time lol I dont like for the medium range dogs to get more than 100 yds away. And one of my pet peeves is that I cant stand these short fat beagles you see all the time. I like longer legged, slim built, fast dogs. But everyone has their own way. I pretty much consider a hunt a failure if we dont kill 10, and not really a success unless we get over 20. 35 was the best ever.
