Quiet Squirrel Gun?

I live in an urban area with neighbors about 20 feet from me. I want to dirtroll some squirrels in my back yard that have won the battle of the bird feeders. The BB/pellet gun thing just scares or wounds them. I need something strong enough to kill one but quiet. Is there a quiet .22 out there or something else? Thanks.
 
You could shoot subsonic .22lr with any .22 rifle. Some i have shot have been very quiet. Less quiet than a pellet gun. They are not real accurate out past 20 yrds or so but up close they are just as other rounds.
 
My dad used to have a lever action Marlin .22 that was capable of shooting 22 shorts.
He bought some 22 CeeBee (I think that was the name) ammo to shoot squirrels off the deck railing at his house.

He would open the sliding glass door and sit at the kitchen table and drink his coffee and shoot them as they got up on the rail.

I was there one day sitting in the living room talking to my mom and he killed 3 and I never heard him shoot.
He was sitting less than 24 feet from me while pulling the trigger.

At one time they advertised that they made less noise than a kernel of popcorn popping.
I believe it.

Okay, so I pounded one with the pellet gun. I must be a good shot cause it only took about 20 tries!!! The sucker fell out of the tree about 2 hours after I hit him in the noggin'.

I lowered the feeder and took a few pics. for laughs. I'll have to write a little humor article about the great white hunter, his BB gun, and his back yard bird feeder.

A Ruger 96/22, SWR Spectre with CCI Standard velocity ammo is my squirrel rifle of choice in Tn.......

That is how i did it back in the day. What little sound they do make expands in the room and almost no sound is heard outside. But be careful, those CBs will bounce of hard ground or trees.

Those CBs are so quite you can hear the firing pin / hammer strike the round.

My Gamo 1000 FPS pellet gun kills them right there, I killed 13 last year off of my father in laws porch and bird feeder.
 
Dittos on the CB's 22 ammo I perfer the Longs over the shorts.
Another possible option is the Sub-Sonic LR these aren't to loud either but the barrel lenght plays a big role in that. Barely can hear the pop from the CB's in just about any 22,the Sub's are just a wee bit louder in my 39A but still good enough for around the house in it.

OH the CB's are quieter than my air rifles with the Sub's about the same.
 
I have a benjamin sheridan 5mm (.20 cal), lever pump action, the fps increase with the number of pumps up to 1000 fps at 10 pumps of the handle.

It is very accurate and deadly out to @ 40yds. and will punch a hole through 1/2" plywood using lead pellets at 30yds.

It is very quiet, I had a red squirrel problem a few summers ago......they were into everything. I went on a mission........38 dead squirrels later, no more problem.

One shot per squirrel, dead on impact.

Honestly if you have neighbors that close you dont need a .22 because of the liability, get a better pellet rifle and it wont take a whole box of pellets to take care of a squirrel, 1 well placed shot should do it, I know guys that kill racoons with pellet guns and it dont take a box of ammo to do it.
 
I have to disagree with a couple of things posted in here........

1. Subsonic ammo is not accurate past 20yds or so......FALSE
The FACT is that the vast majority (if not ALL)match and target ammo is subsonic and extremely accurate when fired from most any weapon. Your particular weapon will, most likely, have a preferred brand or 2 over the vast # of choices out there though.

2. Subsonic rounds will not penetrate a tree......FALSE
This is true for CB caps but false for subsonic 38, 40 or 60 grain ammo which hits hard and with lethal consequences

I don't claim to be an expert in the physics of any ammo but I have shot over 100K rounds of .22 ammo over the last 6 years. Lots at paper targets on plywood backing and lots at small game in the woods.

Also. .22 ammo, no matter the type or brand, is VERY dirty shooting ammo. Probably the 3 most prevalent accuracy issues with a .22 is the gun doesn't like the ammo being used, a dirty gun and the shooter's ability to shoot accurately. Some folks just can't shoot 3/8" or 1/2" groups at 50 yds although another person with the same setup can do it consistently.

I've put LOTS of squirrels in the skillet with these 2 setups......
