Muzzle loader is a separate license, as are big game gun and archery. You can hunt with a muzzy (or bow) DURING rifle season but it requires its own license. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
 
This is gun, muzzle loading, archery season for deer. I'd think any means legal for deer at this time period could be used.
 
Only if you have a MZ permit, then u can carry it during gun season, same with bow if you have a permit for bow you can carry it in any season.

This is from the 2016-2017 Hunting guide on page 15 under miscellaneous.
 
You are not buying a tag for a specific time frame. You're buying a tag for the weapon you're using. If you wanna use a ML that's cool, but you must have a ML tag.

Why not? Once I buy a bow tag I can use it in any season, MZ tag can be used in MZ and Gun seasons. Gun obviously in gun season. As the three seasons are labeled, Archery, MZ/Archery, Gun/MZ/Archery.
 
You can always use a lesser effective weapon during each of the seasons without having the specific license for that weapon.

Not how I understand it. TWRA people, help us out. The way I read it is you have to have the license for the weapon you're using. When you can use it is a totally separate question. I've never seen anything on TWRA about "use a lesser effective weapon without having that license"...

And no a muzzy is not the same as a gun as I understand the TN law.
 
Page 15 of the current Hunting Guide under "Miscellaneous", Note 5 states:

5. Archery equipment is permitted during the archery, Muzzleloader and gun seasons, Muzzleloader equipment is permitted during the muzzleloader and gun seasons.

According to the guide, a ML firearm are "firearms which are incapable of being loaded from the breech". I sometimes get a kick out of showing photos of a Ferguson flintlock rifle and a Savage smokeless together then pointing out that the flintlock is illegal to use in the Tennessee ML season.... after a quizzical expression I tell em the flintlock is a breech loader. :D

That is true but you still have to have a muzzy license to use a muzzy during gun season. I asked this question a while back and at least that is the answer I got.
 
Yes, what you are quoting is about when you can use what weapon. It's additive, as it explains, once muzzy starts you can still use a bow, once rifle starts you can still use bow or muzzy. But that still doesn't answer whether or not you need a license for that particular weapon. It only says they are permitted in that season.

If you sincerely want to know if you need a specific license I would recommend asking this question in the TWRA section where an expert will answer it.
 
They way I've always understood it is that you buy the license for the time period and you can use any of the legally allowed weapons for that time period. For instance if you want to hunt during Gun season, you buy the Gun license. That allows you to hunt during the dates of Gun season with either Gun, ML or bow with no other license for the lesser effective weapons.

However it would be wise to get an official TWRA comment on this as my word won't be worth a tiddly poop if you gat a ticket and take it to the Judge. :)
 
If you archery hunt only all u need is a archery tag which is good for muzzy and gun seasons it's the same with muzzy if that's all you have you can hunt muzzy season and gun with just a muzzy tag u don't have to buy a tag for every season
 
The way I understand it if you take a deer with a muzzleloader you better have a muzzleloader tag to tag it. Same with bow and rifle . During big game gun you can use either weapon as long as you have a tag for the particular weapon.Im not sure what the fine will be but I'm sure the tag would be alot cheaper.lol :smash:
 
All three weapons are legal during the current season. You can use any, or all three, but you must have a big game license for the weapon you are using.

If you have the big game gun license, it is ONLY LEGAL for a CENTERFIRE GUN. You WOULD NOT be legal using a muzzleloader with that license.
 
Its apparent TN hunting regs are well understood[emoji848]

I stand corrected but rule 5 under "Miscellaneous" makes it confusing, at least to me.

Upon closer examination on page 5 in the header above the "Waterfowl(Type 005) it does indicate what scn said.

That was not the question.

He said he had a big game gun license and asked if he could use s muzzleloader with it. The answer is that it WOULD NOT be legal to use a muzzleloader with that license.
