Somewhere thinking about hunting.
In mid Sept. I planted awp in several plots along with oats, rape, & clover. This is my first time trying them. This was in south west Tn. To my suprise the deer have not really touched them. Even the locals told me that the deer liked them. The oats and clover have been browsed, in places to the ground. I have read several posts that deer may not eat them if the soil was sandy in nature which this is. My question is.

Will the deer like them better this coming spring? If not this will be last time using them. Anyone have any input.

I said that about sandy soils. I have no idea why that would be, but it is something I have discussed with other Deep South managers. Many that work in very sandy soils report deer show little interest in AWP if they are planted in sandy soils.

Why is unknown but probably has something to do with a lack of particular nutrient availability in sandy soils hence the plant cannot contain that nutrient, changing the plants taste to deer. Deer have shown an interesting ability--or preference for--plants that contain the nutrients their bodies need at the time. Somehow Nature has worked out that deer will find the right nutrient content plant material tasty (or smells right).

Yes.. I remember you saying that. Do you think they will take a lik'in to them this spring? Maybe when the peas get on them? This is the first time I have ever planted any.
