I'm not gunsmith and don't claim to be one. I can shoot them pretty well but don't like messing with them to much.

My Remington 700 .300RUM needs a lighter trigger.

Can this trigger be adjusted? If not, what are my best options on other triggers for this gun and how hard are they to put on.
 
It can be adjusted, but if you want the absolute best available go with a Jewell. Can adjust it to a few ounces to a few pounds, no creep, breaks cleanly and is built to last. They are pricey at $200+ each (with safety) but in my opinion they are the best there are. I also hear pretty good things about Shilens and Timneys but I always hear "It ain't no Jewell," in the same sentence.
 
They can be adjusted very easily, it jsut depends on how low you really want it. You need a wrench to take the action out of the stock(allen wrench), and small flathead, and some fingernail topcoat. Loosen the two screws on the trigger mechanism until you have your weight and creep where you want it then put the topcoat on. Make sure you bang the butt of your rifle on the ground a few times and work the bolt and what not to make sure you havent created a safety hazard.
 
Easy as pie to adjust a Rem trigger to 2.5-3#. It'll take you 30min to an hour the first time to do it, not that it's hard, but just to get a feel. Tiny adjustments to the set screws can make a world of difference in creep and crispness of the pull. Once you get the feel, you can adjust one in 10-15 minutes.

I've got an ABolt II that I intend on getting a gunsmith to make the trigger lighter, more crisp, and hopefully a shorter pull.

Do it UNLOADED (duh)! My brother-in-law adjusted the trigger on his '06 Savage 110 once and it fired when I closed the bolt vigorously. It scared the shiznitt out of me, but following basic gun safety rules kept anything worse than skidmarked drawers from happening. He did not check it for safety hazards before loading it.
