Never hunted ducks before and have my first hunt coming up on Reelfoot on the 19th. The posts I've seen talk about how badly birds are moving so far this year. I look forward to my first duck hunt and have no expectations - just an opportunity to spend some time with some buddies and maybe get a few shots from a group of four that have never shot at a duck in their lives.

So my question is this - how quickly can the migration start up? I see high temps tomorrow but highs in the mid 30's locally Wednesday. Is this enough to get them going or is the reality that this year is likely a bust? I have no clue if we could see an increase by the 19th in/around Reelfoot if the temps dropped tomorrow. Just curios on thoughts out there. More to hunting then killing for sure but I have no experience with ducks so thought I'd ask.

Typically these last few weeks are best so I'd say you planned correctly. I'd personally like to see highs in the single digits to the teens all the way down to Kansas City....That being said you never know what can happen. There are ducks here but it's getting harder to kill them everyday.

The migration can literally hit overnight.
The unicorn of waterfowl hunting is to be there on "push day"

For it to affect us you will need a massive freezing weather event up North of us.
I haven't seen that in the forecast yet though.

Depending on who you are hunting with you will kill a few ducks or get skunked.
Just enjoy the experience.

Well, the good news is you are near the Mississippi river, which is high and out now, but fixing to crest with a slow fall. The 19th is still a few days out, so that's good. But, many states are now closed above us. Reports I'm getting are there is still tons of birds WAY above us, never have left, have plenty of water, food, no pressure now. We really need snow, and brutal cold to come in from above us. and it needs to stay cold. Weather pattern is showing a shift, but I really don't know if a big push will happen. I believe it will, but probably Feb. hope you have a great hunt. You still should take some birds. Most push days happen during the night. Refuge managers will tell you, today they count 10,000. next day, 30,000. Usually associated with a big weather, water event.

I am there every weekend and lots of week days. I would get my money back or move your deposit to next year. It does not cost me anything to go as I own my own farm, and I want go, this season is a bust.
 
Well - all 4 of us work at the same place and hard to pull off getting us together so we'll keep the hunt. Great opportunity to hang out and enjoy the time. No expectations which may be good or may be bad. Guess we shall see...
 
Who ya'll hunting with?

Been seeing some pics on Instagram and it appears the hunting is getting a little better every day now.
Nothing that will blow you away but a lot better than the last 3 or 4 weeks.
 
Camo Collective - not familiar with them... yet anyway. Maybe the snow expected just north of us in the next few days will help.
 
I was on the North Fork today just E/SE of Dyersburg and had a good morning. Had a buddy just south of Tigrett and they killed 37 yesterday. Friend that said they were smacking em all around Tigrett. An increase in birds killed in Maness Swamp area. All somewhat around the NW quadrant but there were a good many ducks that pushed in.
 
Yes, the 8th was good, but seems they went right on thru. Im puzzled as to where they moved from, wasn't any reason for it weather or water wise. Yesterday most didn't kill many at all. We also had a big day at
tigrett .wish it would have lasted a little longer.
