We checked some trail cams yesterday. We had one buck on there twice. Looked to be a very young deer. He had one side that was real nice (4 points )for that young of a deer. The other side was a single spike coming up 12 inches or longer.

We dont have a real good side pic of him so see if there is a injury. But theres about a 50/50 talk of letting him go one more year. And some others are wanting to take him out of the heard. I will get the pic and pm it to you. I put it back into the trail cam.

But my main thoughts do you think he needs to be taken out. Or since he's young let him go another year and see. Im in favor of letting him walk. Land owner thinks he needs to be taken out.

Yearling bucks often grow "strange" antlers that are not repeated later in life.

But if you're worried about this buck passing on "bad antler genes," don't. His rack isn't genetic hence can't be passed on. If your worried he won't ever measure up even at maturity because he has one bad antler, well, that's very possible. However, very, very rarely have I seen a situation where one more mature buck in the area--even one you don't want to hang on the wall--is a bad thing. Mature bucks--by their very pressence--improve the behavior and health of the entire local herd.

Now if you're in the very rare situation where you literally have too many bucks for the area, yes then he would be a prime candidate to go. But how many managers are really in that situation?

Girls to pretty, or a car to fast...good song.

As others have siad, I'd let him go. My experience on clubs is that "culls" equate to target opportunities that probably wont be hard to kill (compared to mature bucks).
 
Here is a buck I got on trail cam last week.

I have never seen him before but he looks like
a mature buck. Dont know if its a injury or
what. Does this look like your buck Jeff?

That's unquestionably an injury-induced antler deformation.

He may grow that rack for the rest of his life (if it is a pedicle injury), or it may go away with time (if the injury was a non-major bodily injury or an injury to the growing antler).
 
I went to video the Tuesday aftenoon. I wanted to get a better view of three shooter bucks hitting the beans.

Well the buck that i wrote this post about came out. I got to look at him better than what the trail cam pics showed. The one side has four points. But the other is a tall spike that splits off the back and comes straight up as well. He is a young deer. The land owner was with my while i was there. And he was using my spotting scope. He now agreed with me to let it walk.

But boy did the shooter bucks i was seeing put on some tine length since last month.

Pretty close to that buck but with better tine length and a lot smaller body. That one in the pic you got does look like a mature buck that didnt produce much.
