question for boolit casters

do you buy "certified pure lead" or just use scrap lead as I do, the reason for this question is boolit weight, I was talking to a dude at Buffalo Arms today, he stated that he purchased his lead, mixed at a rate of 20:1, when he cast his 400 grain boolits he was staying within 0.2 tenths of a grain per boolit, I am lucky to stay within 3.0 grains with the lead I am using

reason for this question is that I am striving towards maximum accuracy at long distances, iron sights

Wheel weights is what I use. You can cast it straight without adding any tin or antimony. I will occasionally add some linotype to make it harder, but don't have to to get a good pour. I also water quench for hardness.

Now, this is for a 45/70 guide gun and I have no apsirations as a long range shooter. I can't remember what my range of weight was when csting, as I have not measured it in some time.

I think that guy at Buffalo Arms needs an enema because to me he sounds like he might be full of it! I've cast literally thousands of bullets in my day and have never been able to maintain those kind of tolerances. Your 3.0 gr. varience sounds about right to me. There are many other things that can effect the accuracy potential you are trying to get other than the weight of your bullet. If you're only working with one style of bullet, are you sure that's the one your gun "likes".

yep, it sounds a little weird to me also, I have noticed when I cast[outdoors], on 45 degree days boolits weigh 394-395 grains, on 55-60 degree days by boolits weigh 397-398 grains

as far as which boolit my shiloh sharps likes, I am to early in the game to make a boolit change, I am sure I will purchase another mold before this fall

If you dont change batches of lead, your boolits should all come out "close". Casting tempo, lead temp, mold temp will all affect the final weight of your boolits.

my casting tempo is my problem at this point in time, the dude at Buffalo Arms told me to try 750 degrees, I have been hanging around 700
