I watched what appeared to be a young doe running around, with her tail up , like something was chasing her , but there was not.

She was wuith a group of does, all age structure seemed to be represented and all were feeding along and not too interested in what this crazy deer was doing....

Any ideas on why she was acting so WILD!? She kept running around, stopping ever so often then taking off running into the woods and back out into the field and so forth. She wasn't just running around, but more like running at top speed and dodging in and out like she was crazy....

She did this for the entire time the group was in the area....she never seemed to calm down.

I know deer get HAPPY from time to time, but in almost 40 years of deer hunting, I have never seen so much JOY!!! lol


any thoughts??
 
Someone with far more deer knowledge than me will jump in here, but since you said "any thoughts" I'll give mine.

This may or may not be the same behavior, but I have seen fawns (or young deer if not fawns) play like that. If there are two of them they will chase each other at top speed and go for a long distance, circling back to momma. I watched a single fawn do this with the doe standing about 40 yards in front of my stand. The little guy would tear out at top speed, be gone for a minute or two, and then come running back to be greeted with a nose rub by an adoring mother, and then off he would go again. I figured it was the equivalent of "child's play".
 
I witnessed the same exact thing Sunday afternoon. Never seen anything like it. A group of four came out and a young doe started running around like it was crazy. It ran around at 60 yard path in and out out the woods and the other does acted like they wanted to get her out of there. Like you I have no idea why but would love to know the answer.
 
Last hunt a couple days ago two fawns were chasing each other around big circles through the woods. After several rounds, they came back to momma.
 
Just playing. We had one here atthe house this summer that chased my dog around like that. They don't always need company.
 
Basically what I was thinking. I've seen this type behavior, sort of, before.....just not at this level. This deer was flat out sprinting at high speeds around and around in and out of the woods , jumping a ditch, dodging trees, the whole nine yards..lol.

I guess she was just showing off to the grown ups like most kids do...
