Question about a 7mm Rem Mag?

I just took in on trade a Ruger Mark II M77 7mm Rem Mag. The guy gave me 2 boxes of hornady sst 139 gr bullets. My first question is how many guys use a 7mm Rem Mag on whitetail and is the bullet good for whitetail? I really like the look and feel of this gun. Gun has only been shot to sight in. Its like brand new. Thanks for any answers!

7mm Mags are a great round for deer, especially a great long range round. I've hunted with them and know lots of guys that hunt with them!

I have taken many deer with a 7mag. I have never used anything lighter than 150 grains. The sst bullet is a good bullet and I have used the 139 in 7-08 with good results. Not sure if the 139sst will hold together at 7mag velocities though, if that concerns you.

I have shot alot of different bullets out of mine and settled on 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. Every gun and situation will be different though.

Not at all. It's an absolute lightning bolt on whitetails with a well placed shot.

I have shot SST's and they aren't my favorite because they have fragmented badly on multiple occasions. That being said, that 139 GR SST in 7mm Remington Magnum will kill deer just fine. The top four all-around rifle cartridges for CXP2 and CXP3 sized game are generally considered to be the 270 WIN, 7mm Remington Magnum, 308 WIN and 30-06. The 7mm Remington Magnum is one of the finest long range calibers ever developed and the best selling magnum cartridge of all time. You've got a proven winner.

I only shoot sst's don't have that gun so idk about what grain but I highly recommend that bullet outstanding performance and does a number on deer and anything ive used it on.

My dad has a remington 700 7 mag and he has lost more deer with that gun than he did when he used a 30-30 marlin. He's not a bad shot and the deer he shot had good blood trails but it just didn't knock then down. I use a 700 30-06 and have never lost a deer(just jinked it) i personally wouldn't use one cuz it's so high of a caliber but that's your choice. Either way it's a great gun.

In 35 years of shooting.. I have only had one scope hit me in the eye when I was shooting.. and yep.. it was a 7 mag.. 5-6 years later I sighted in a 7 mag for a buddy.. I thought it had dislocated my shoulder.. I have a brand new never fired BAR safari grade 7 mag in my safe... it will probably never be fired..LOL....

I have shot the sst 150 in my 30.06 last three years with great success. I was just worried the the 139 gr would fragment in a magnum shell on a deer. Thanks everyone for all the advice!

I shot a 7mag for 20 plus years and love it. I've never lost a deer with it that I hit in the vitals. I shoot a 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip in handloads and have a buddy that shoots 120gr of the same bullet and has had the same results. Great gun if your hunting longrange.

Not trying to cause a problem but I shoot the exact same gun and did not have any luck with the lighter rounds , I use Winchester Supreme 150 gr. Balistic Silvertips with great success . Believe I would shoot at least 150 gr. bullet if I were you . Take the 7mm mag . over 30 06 any day :grin:

Been hunting 7mm mag with 150 grain CXP2's for years, never lost a deer. Most of them also never took a step.

I have shot countless whitetails, 2 250lb plus muleys at 100 yards or more, 3 antelope over 200 yards...all with a BAR 7mm, 162 grain hornadys.

The muleys didnt fall hard but didnt go far either. Everything else drops or runs within sight...all shot on or slightly behind shoulder. Usually messes up shoulder meat but I would rather loose a little shoulder meat than loose all of it.

Im am looking at selling this gun now, for no other reason than I want a 300 mag barrel for my Pro Hunter and I am building a .243 for whitetail and antelope this summer.

That's the only downside, they are a little more expensive.

I have a 7mm Mag and I use Remington Corelok or Winchester X bullets. I've only shot at one deer, and it went down. I like it. It's good for just about any game in North America, maybe except the big grizzy bears.

I shoot 140 barnes TTSX. I have yet to kill a deer with mine "bought it last year" but it is one of the most accurate guns I own.
