Quail on cheatham

Anyone found or hunted quail on Cheatham WMA? I heard there's a juvy hunt or something there, but I'd like to find a covey or two and try shoot a couple if I get the chance. I know a place a mile down the road from me that has quail, but it's a field owned by the HOA and I don't think anyone would take well to a shotgun being fired behind people's homes ;)

I am not aware of wild quail on Cheatham but it wouldn't surprise me. In the hunt guide will be a phone no. for Cheatham's Randy Cromer - he is always full of helpful advice. There is an annual youth quail hunt with released birds provided by the Music City Chapter of Quail Forever(QF) in January or February. Music City QF does have a very low cost ($25?) released bird fun hunt in Maury County in January so if you are interested in that contact QF. I have a Brittany I wish I could find a spot to go to that has some wild quail. Does anyone know of any places to find quail other than Fort Campbell?

Pellet gun would work.

nope... The thick grass/forb cover that quail live in makes it impossible for a pellet gun shot. They flush before you ever see one. I have not seen one on the ground, but flushed plenty of times.

Didn't know the youth quail hunt was released birds. Thanks for the info, and the maury co released bird hunt sounds like fun.

I have never seen or heard a covviey of quail flush on Cheatham WMA , there were lots of tree rats before the drought of 1986-1987 and the White oaks were cut back by the forest Department for timber , not as many as there were.

yeah man.. I bet I could kill one or two if I really went at it. Only problem is, I can't devote all my hunting time to creeping through tall grass trying to pop a quail before they flush. I still gotta kill my first deer and not to mention fall turkey hunting.
