QDMA article on Ames

Pretty nice article came out this month on the Ames hunting club and its success with QDM. My sixth year with the club, I can say they are dedicated to QDM principles and to the club's overall success. In spite of some things I've heard to the contrary, the people there do an outstanding job and are of the highest character. The club's stats speak volumes to their effectiveness as managers. This type of club is not for everyone but, I wouldn't want to hunt anywhere else.

Truer words have never been spoken. Ms. Betty's cooking has saved more mature bucks than any other factor at Ames. We eat her unbelievable cooking and then we cannot get off the couch the rest of the day, being lazy bums watching college football. The mature bucks have little to worry about in the afternoons because of her.

Great article! I have wrangled back-and-forth for months about joining and at least once a week decide to pull the trigger then back out. I just wish it was 20 miles closer, youth under age 10 could still participate in the juvenile hunt, and access was available to run cameras during the spring and summer as well. What is this years member count up to now?

Has anyone plotted buck kill dates on a calendar? What seems to be the primary breeding date?

Not to my knowledge. A lot of what is seen, and killed, depends on the weather that day.

Last week of November and first week of December.

A couple weeks ago out of curiosity I plotted it by week based on the website data and when averaged I believe it shows a curve that is highest the third and fourth weeks of November and just a little lower in the first week of December. Some years there has been another secondary rut spike in mid-late December but it's variable. Like Andy said, weather and weekends (hunting hours) skew the specific dates for buck kills but there are some pretty clear macro trends around the rut that seem consistent year to year.

What an excellent article! Kudos to Ames and those that made it what it is.

I remember visiting Ames when I worked for UT, we blew up some beaver dams. Top notch facility.
