I've been hunting some family land near Center Hill Lake all my life. About 5 years ago I made the commitment to let everything walk except does and bucks that I would mount. Last year I had to lease a portion of it. I decided to get some buddies help me afford it. Our QDM rules are simple if you need meat or wanna watch something die, shoot a doe. If you shoot a buck, make sure its one you would mount. I think this rule allows a hunter to shoot what makes them happy, and not what someone else decided. We have let a bus load of young bucks walk each weekend, and this year have harvested three bucks with this being the biggest.

I shot him Sat. 11-29-08 right before dark, he weighed 180 live weight. Had 9 points with 5.5 inch bases. I'd shoot him in Illinois, but am so tickeled to have killed him on my home ground!

Let the young ones walk!

I love this type of rule for a hunting property. It lets everyone decide what meets their idea of a trophy.

Thats our goal exactly!

In 2 season we have killed 17 does and 3 bucks. All of the bucks have been 2.5 years or older and we have tons of little bucks all over the place. As we tried to decide what the "buck rule" was gonna be we kept running into issues when we looked at number of points or spread. Another secondary goal was to make it a fun place to hunt. As we see bigger deer its easier for everyone to let little ones walk. We are also seeing more buck activity period, which is making hunting more fun period! I'm excited to see what the seasons ahead will produce!
 
That's a big boy in my book. Well done! The proof is in the pudding right here. You get a group of people together with a similar mindset, and you'll get results. Glad to see it paid off for you!

Your situation is a prime example of club/property "rules" that perfectly meet goals. And that's a ket to any single-property management program's success. Each group/land-owner has to evaluate what they really want out of their hunting experience and then design goals that will effectively produce that experience.

That's the beauty of individual property management. Each property can manage for a different experience. Those that want bucks for the wall can set a "if you are going to mount it" buck harvest criterion. Those that want a more "buck harvest every year" type goal can set a low age limit on bucks. Those that want to hunt mature bucks can set a high buck age-limit.

Buck harvest limits should be set to acheive what the hunters want and should be left fluid enough that they can be easily altered to meet changes in goals over time.
