Anyone ever dump a bag of pure salt pellets to start a mineral lick? Someone gave me two bags and I think I'll give it a try.

I found a heavily used trail less than 100 yards behind my house so I might dig a hole and dump a bag in it. Would pouring water on it so it disolves be a good idea?

I have been getting more activity at the water softener pellets over the last 2 weeks than any of my mineral blocks. I had pics of a couple of bucks nearby, and a doe with her nose right in the salt. I've also seen a couple of posts on TNDeer where other members are using them too.

Actually, I hauled about three gallons of water to the woods with me to pour on the 40 lbs of salt pellets. I don't know if it helped or not, but with a decent amount of rain, the pellets will dissolve quickly. I only pay about $3.99 per $40 pound bag of salt.

That's exactly what I use most of the time. The deer probably won't get much in the way of minerals etc but they will readily use it.
I don't even dig a hole for it just pour it on the ground. the rain will disolve it and the deer will create their own hole.

I think Ill dump about half a bag, they're 50lb bags, into a 5 gallon bucket and filling it up with water. We aren't supposeto get rain for a while is why I want to already put in the water.

I'll put it out this evening and chek it Friday when I get my cams out of the woods. If they use it Ill put a cam on it. Who knows, I may be sitting in my backyard bow hunting this fall :)

I don't think it matters much.
Salt is salt.

Most of the additives in the commercial "salts" marketed as "deer bait" are mostly marketing hype.

I use mostly red trace mineral salt (from any County Co-Op).
Also use the Trophy Rocks, mainly in places where I don't want the spot to be as noticeable to a human. But any salt you have on hand is just fine.
