Purchasing a rifle

My wife went to purchase a rifle for our son, for a Christmas present. The lady asked her if it was for a present. She said yes, for my boy. The lady told her she would have to put it in layaway, since the gun was not for her, said it was illegal to sell it to her since it was for somebody else. How are you supposed to buy a gun that is for a youth? I'm still not sure what putting it in layaway would solve anyway?!

back when I worked in a gun shop, purchasing a firearm for another person, even a relative, was considered a straw sale. illegal sale by federal laws.
