I am looking to get a shotgun for home defense only. I am wondering which I should get. What are the pros and cons of each?
I have never owned a auto shotgun. What make and model would be a good fit for this type of application. I dont't want to break the bank for a gun that won't be used much (I hope).

Pump, easier to cycle that first round into the chamber. Second...it has a very distint sound that if heard in the middle of the night will cause a stain in the intruders drawers.

Pump. I still have a mossberg 500 with 18 1/2" barrel and pistol grip stock I bought from Service Merchandise many moons ago. I have since updated with a longer barrel and normal stock, to make it more useful.
 
I'd go with an auto,why even give the thieves a chance to hear you rack the pump and a chance to run or move out of the way???
 
I have a pump Mossburg 500. 870 is just as good imo if you break in my house you will never hear the gun cycle unless there are two of you then only one will hear the racking of the shotgun
 
there is not a more intimidating sound the the sound of a pump shotgun being racked. a pump is also less likely to jam at a bad time. 870 all the way.
 
The two sounds that everyone on the planet with the gift of hearing knows instantly:


1. The sound of a rattlesnake rattling.

2. The sound of a pump shotgun cycling.

Both remove people from the general area equally well.

Was going Turkey hunting had the breach open sitting in the corner of the kitchen just so happen to b the part I grabbed when I went out the door
