Proposal to Allow Handguns During Muzzleloader Season

I am doing a second hunter survey to see if this idea would be acceptable, to allow the use of handguns during muzzleloader season. The argument of making it a full fledged rifle season seems to have some saying the woods would flood with deer, but I highly doubt that could be said for just allowing the use of handguns during muzzleloader season. This would place us closer to being on par with Mississippi, Missouri, Indiana, South Carolina and others...

Why do you want to be on par with other states?? You can buy a license and hunt there now! I see NO reason to add Handguns to our MZ season, simply NO need for it!

The only problem with this is that the limits would have to drop to offset the ease with which hunters would now have to kill deer. Especially rifle hunters shooting deer in September in bean fields. Or the season would have to be shortened. Either way we'd have to give up something to keep harvest numbers about the same. Not that this couldn't be done.

My biggest problem with this personally would be having to chose between letting my neighbors get a head start by hunting deer with 270's across big bean fields in the late Summer heat, or waiting for the 1st frost, when I could enjoy the hunting, but half the good bucks would already be dead.

I can see a justification for allowing handguns an early start if weapon effectiveness is taken into account. You'd have to change the name of the season though. Not sure what you'd call it. "Inferior Weapon season"???? The only problem I see with handguns is that you have handguns and then you have handguns. :) A Ruger Blackhawk in 44 Special with open sights is a whole different ballgame from a Contender chambered to the 30 Herrett with a scope on top rested on a tripod inside a blind. I suppose that would be no more effective than a modern ML but then see my response to the other thread where I'm in favor of doing away with a separate ML season entirely.

That's what I was thinking as I read down through the posts.... Also same argument that gets brought up every year wanting shotguns in ML seasons... This time it just happens to be handguns that are being requested. I understand that "most" handguns do not have the effective range of a shotgun especially when you put a rifled barrel on it, but I'm still against it.

This time it just happens to be handguns that are being requested. I understand that "most" handguns do not have the effective range of a shotgun especially when you put a rifled barrel on it, but I'm still against it.

You could get a TC Encore in 30-06/ 270 and with a proper rest and scope darn near reach out to 200-300 yards if you know what your doing. But yeah I get the "most" part. Also "most" people don't know how to manage a hunting handgun properly with a scope. It takes a really steady rest to achieve long range results. Most peoples though is to put on a 4x or 6x scope and that is some pretty high magnification for a pistol.

Do not see the need for this.I think you should leave setting the seasons up to TWRA.They look at the big picture not just what best suites one person.

Unnecessary as pistols are legal during gun season now. Moving it up 2 weeks would just cause unnecessary complications for enforcement without creating any new opportunities for hunters.

single shot shotguns

single shot handguns firing traditional pistol cartridges

single shot rifles firing traditional pistol cartridges or rifle cartridges .35 caliber and above that are straight walled

I have proposed this five times over 7 years and it got nowhere

That is true, but I have heard this as a proposal before and I have proposed this so I am just getting an opinion

I would be for some type of handgun season if the handgun was chambered in a pistol round. There are states that do this. But against messing with muzzleloader season.
