When I first bought my property about 3 years ago, it was part of a 1200 acres clear-cut site surrounded by a couple thousand acres of mature hardwoods. The first 2 years after the cut I noticed a large number of coyotes around the area. Well over the last year and a half or so I have observed a huge reduction in coyote numbers. With most of the property being in a great cover stage right now for both deer and small game, is it possible that the coyotes just left and went where it is easier for them to hunt? I do sometimes hear them on surrounding properties with mature hardwoods but very seldom by my property.

Has anyone else noticed that while improving the cover on your property you have reduced the overall number of predators?

Studies have indicated coyotes do not like to hunt in areas with very limited visibility. And it doesn't have to be difficult to move through. Apparently they will even avoid Native Warm-Season Grass stands, which aren't difficult to move through but are virtually impossible to see through from a coyotes eye-level.

I have noticed the same. The first few years I was covered up but even now I still see evidence and see a few every year. In the area they are thick, last year a buddy shot a doe a little back and in the morning the only thing left was the head and skeleton.

It doesn't take many coyotes to do that. We've never recovered a fully intact deer that had to be left overnight. The coyotes ALWAYS get them before daylight.
