I only had 1 priority point this year, but let someone with 0 pts join my party, does that mean if we draw something I go back to 0 or will I still have 1 if I don't put in with a party next year?

Yep you went back to zero. The member with the lowest points in the group is what everybody else goes to

The way I understand it is that for this drawing, you are at the level of the lowest preference point member in your party. So you are at zero for this draw. If you get drawn, you go back to zero. If you do not get drawn, you will add another preference point to your total.

You do not lose your preference point and go back to zero by adding someone with zero preference points to your party except for the current drawing.

I'm pretty sure that just by letting them join the party, you lost your point.

Only for the current drawing.
that is what I was thinking, but I'm pretty sure I will be at 0 anyways be we put in for all the oak ridge hunts, almost impossible to not be drawn ;)

Just a hypothetical question here...if I had 1 point going into this year and put in for a draw with someone else that had 0, I'd also have 0 for this draw. Next year we'd both have 1 point if we put in together. If I put in next year by myself could I recapture the priority point I lost the year before by putting in with someone that had 0 points or would it be lost forever?

Correct, the party points for a single year's draw is the same as the member with the lowest, so your party would have 0.

No. If your party was drawn, you both would have 0 pref points the next year (successful draw = all applicant's points go back to 0). If your party was unsuccessful, YOU would have 2 points next year and the other applicant with 0 points going into th draw would have 1 because both of you would gain a point for not being drawn.

The only way to LOSE/RESET points (go back to 0) is to be successful and draw a hunt. If you are not successful, you gain a point no matter if you put in alone or with a party.

In a nutshell, if you apply, alone or in a party and do not get drawn, you GAIN a point. If you apply, alone or in a party and are drawn, your points RESET back to 0.

I understand that Andy. What I was curious about is the 1 point I gave up by entering a draw with someone that had 1 point less than me. Granted, provided we weren't drawn we'd both gain a point the following year. However, if that following year if I put in by myself, could I recapture that point I'd given up the previous year by entering with someone that had 1 point less than me. I doubt you would but I've never heard for positive.

You DO NOT lose a point if you are unsuccessful in the quota drawing. You do not "give up" a point if you apply with someone with less preference points.

If you draw as a party, the priority is whatever is the lowest preference point in the party for that drawing. If one member has 0 preference points, then the priority for the whole party is zero for that year's drawing. If the lowest member has 7 preference points, the priority is 7 for the entire party. If the party is successful in drawing a hunt, the entire party resets to 0 preference points for the following year. If the party is unsuccessful, then each member of the party adds one preference point to whatever they had going into the drawing.

You only gave it up for that "particular draw" (i.e. party points equaled zero for current draw), not for the following years (assuming you didn't get drawn and reset to 0). If you were drawn, you did not give it up, you just reset to 0 for being selected.

Correct.

I don't follow this and the reason I don't is there is no point to recapture because both of you were awarded a point for not being drawn, just the same as both of you would have if you had both put in alone (no party) and not been drawn. The outcome is the same if you are not drawn; whether you put in alone or as a party, you both get a point.

I guess I'm not explaining this right. I'll start over. Let's say I had 2 priority points and I put in with someone that only had 1. I drop down to 1 priority point doing so, effectively losing 1 of the priority points I already had. Neither of us get drawn this year so we both gain another point. The following year we both would have 2 priority points. Let's say that next year I put in for a hunt by myself. My question is, by putting in by myself is there any way I can gain back that priority point I gave up the preceding year by joining up with someone that had 1 less than me or is it lost forever since I gave it up that year?

You are not giving up the priority point if you put in with someone with less points. Your party is. For your scenario,
you have 2 points and your buddy has 1 point, and you put in together for a hunt this year. You still keep your two points, but the party draw goes to the lowest point total which means that the party would have one point for that draw only. If you are unsuccessful, you would have 3 points going into next year, and he would have 2. If you put in by yourself next year, you would still have 3 points for the draw as you didn't lose your points on paper. They only draw to the lowest point total in the party. They don't take them away.

You ONLY drop down for that particular draw. If you are unsuccessful, you retain your points and add another point, thus not losing anything.

Not so.

No, he has 2 and you have 3 because you NEVER lost your point in the overall system, ONLY for that particular drawing.

You never gave it up overall, just for that particular draw. You will always retain YOUR points in the SYSTEM unless you are drawn.
