"Primitive Caliber" Straight Wall Cartridge Coming?

I see other states allow the straight wall cartridges like the 45/70 or 44 mag in single shot during muzzleloader. Do y'all think Tennessee is going to move to this? With modern smokeless muzzleloaders and inlines, there isn't much ballistic advantage allowing 45/70, 444 and others. If it is passed I might keep my muzzleloader in the case. One thing I'm not a fan of is cleaning my muzzleloader after shooting, hang fires or misfires and worrying about my powder getting wet. Thoughts?

A proposal for such was struck down in last year's session. I don't like the cleaning and stuff either, but that's part of the hassle of muzzle loading. If you don't like the cleaning then you can always go smokeless. If it was passed I would prefer that it be straight walled cartridges of 35 caliber or larger, but I'm not advocating for it. I may get a single shot 45/70 if it were allowed, but once again I'm not advocating for it.

It was discussed at one point, but I guess it didn't have enough support to be recommended by the agency. It was not proposed in the regulation-setting process.

It didn't pass last year. Just my opinion but it was politics that shot that down. Most modern ML's are at least, if not more accurate, than the straight wall cartridges. I was in favor of it.

Let's keep MZ as is.

And have a two-week primitive weapon season the two weeks before MZ. :D

M/L season stopped being a disadvantage compared to rifles when inlines/smokeless/scopes started going to the woods. Honestly I believe they should either go with open site traditional M/L's for a M/L season or just open it to any weapon and let it go.

As long as a rifle has to be loaded from the muzzle it will be a disadvantage to a rifle; if for no other reason than a quick follow-up shot (or 30 depending on magazine size). :)

95% of the places I hunt is wooded and your not getting but one shot no matter what your hunting with.

I would be for it. I think a 45/70 or a 444 marlin would leave a lot better blood trail than my knight muzzleloader. 45/70 has a lot more knock down power than my 50 cal with sabots.

I'm going to smokeless conversion next year. No more sooty mess or hang fire. Muzzleloader season only exists because of tradition so I doubt they will change it.

95% of the places I hunt is wooded and your not getting but one shot no matter what your hunting with.

I got 3 shots at 3 deer the other day in the woods and it's not the first time I've got more than one shot opportunity

If there weren't advantages of rifle over muzzleloader this topic wouldn't come up several times each year.

I changed my position to neutral on it now that my kids are hunting. A 45/70 or 44 single shot would be simpler and safer than a muzzleloader. Officially, I'd rather the regs in general stay the same for a while. For the sake of peace. :)

If that was to pass might as well open it up to what you want to use,I know I wont buy 1 at this point unless its to convert to a smokeless muzzle loader,heck with CWD here now my deer hunting days are numbered as I wont eat any that may be infected,you all are welcome to make up your own minds as its a personal choice and I wont try to change anybody's mind

I no longer care now that my son is capable of handling the recoil of a ML. In years before that, I was a very strong opponent of excluding kids from hunting during the best 2 weeks of the season. My 2 girls still won't shoot the ML, however. I don't particularly enjoy cleaning the ML myself, but I can live with it in exchange for the very best time in the woods to kill a mature buck.

If they did that all they would be doing is opening up a can of worms.A lot of hunters would be hunting with centerfire rifles.270 243 and so on.Just sounds like a bad idea to me.Very few muzzle loaders would be used.IMO

Basically do away with muzzle loading season because there are some who don't like to clean their guns. We will call it primitive gun season to allow single shot cartridge guns even though these single shots are not primitive in any respect.

A 45/70 or .44 mag is centerfire. We already have a season for that. Leave muzzleloader alone. If you don't like to muzzleloader then just wait 2 weeks. Muzzleloader is just that, loaded from the muzzle. A single shot straight wall centerfire rifle is just that...a rifle. Why introduce a rifle to muzzleloader season. If you want a primitive weapon season, I see that as old muzzleloader with no scope and patch and round ball.

5.8 pounds is a full 3 pounds lighter than savage smokeless. Plus it would be nice not to have to tote powder, primers, sabots, bullets. Same projectile. Both single shot
