When 209 muzzleloaders came up I bought a bunch of 209 shotgun primers and used them ever since. I ran out yesterday. Everyone tells me to 777 primers way cleaner. Is this true? I have never had an issue with just the plain primers.

Winchester 209 primers in my TC Omega X7 with great results (no blow back whatsoever) and I use CCI209M and Fed209A in my Knights. If you are using Blackhorn 209 you will probably need to go with one of these three primers.

If Pyrodex I would recommend Winchester 209 (blue box). They are very good primers. I tried to use the 777 primers with Pyrodex to decrease the dreaded "crud ring" but it only reduced it a little. I went to BH209 two years ago due to the ease of cleaning, numerous follow up shots at the range and in the field without having to swab the barrel and ZERO CRUD RING!!!
