From the draw hunt I assume? The major flooding didn't start until around December 28 and it lasted two weeks, or thereabouts. It was the 6th highest flood of record for our area but you heard very little about it because the MS River Levees and other flood control structures performed flawlessly for the most part.muddyboots":27wymjtb said:The pics were on here back about Christmas. Most GPS and radio-telemetry studies of deer in flood-plain environments find that those deer have adapted to the periodic/annual flooding events, and rapidly shift out of the flood-plain, sometimes considerable distances. This is especially true where man-made levees allow close and easy escape from the flood-waters. Only in extreme flood situations have these studies found significant mortality, and then only where levees don't exist, hence travel distances needed to escape flood-waters can be extreme during record-breaking flood events.

It is clear from the sand deposits that the island has gotten cut in half before during flood stage, so why hasn't the river split the island into 2 pieces and followed the path of least resistance? If I had to guess, its because the COE dredges the main channel and keeps it that way. Andy S should be able to fill us in.
The main thing that protects it is the northeast corner has a very high bank, thus preventing over topping unless a major event happens (2011 & 2015). Because of this, the majority of the flood water backs up onto the island from the southwest corner, thus reducing the hydraulic head when it does over top, which significantly reduces damages once the water does over top from the north. It is a natural grade elevation (not man made), but with that said, we realize the importance of it and take every measure we can to keep it intact. If you have been out there lately, you will see a very huge area that has been back filled with 2 million cubic yards of dredge material and reinforced with a stone cap and stone vertical face on the northeast corner.
