i was wonderin what powder yall would suggest? is the jim shockey powder as clean as he advertises? has anyone else used it?

I checked into this question about the J Shockey powder. I planned on buying it.
Heard many negative reports about it.
Enough that I decided not to use it.

May not be good info, but that is what I read in several posts.

Assuming you are asking how many shots do we get before having accuracy or loading problems, before cleaning...

Depends on the bullet...

Hornady FPBs - I get 10 - 15(no patching between shots) before loading gets stiff - accuracy does not fade

Hornady SSTs - I get 8 - 10 (patching between shots) before loading gets stiff and accuracy starts to fade

Powerbelts - 3 and accuracy is gone

TC Maxiballs - 5 - 7 (patching between shots) and loading gets a little stiff and accuracy starts to fade but not bad

With the FPBs and the Maxiballs when I get to the points described above all I have to do is run some solvent pathces and a little borebutter followed by a couple dry patches, fire a primer with out a load and start over...


With the Powerbelts (I quit using them because of accuracy) and with any bullet that has a sabot I have to completly scrub the barrel to remove all the plastic build up.

While this is still true for the Hornady SSTs and their easy load sabots it seems that they do not leave as much build up and cleaning seems to be alittle easier.

One point I want to make since your question pointed towards 777 powder...

I use to use Pyrodex pellets, and honestly the reason I got away from them was for cleaning purposes. Pryodex seemed to leave 10x more gunk in my breeches and barrels and in general all over my guns. I switched to 777 pellets and right away noticed the difference. Faster ignition, a more crip and cleaner burn. Then I went to 777 loose this year. And all I can say is WOW! The difference is in being able to dial down the loads to fit each gun barrel and bullet. When the ultimate load is acheived, my guns are way cleaner and more accurate...

I do not know about the Blackhorn, never tried it...maybe next year...I have several cans of 777...
