powder vs. pellets

I know this has probably been asked more than once but which do you prefer. Several of my buddies say that they do not trust them and I was shooting the other day and finished of a box of 777 pellets and cracked open a brand new box and for some reason my gun shot different. Is this common with pellets?
 
yes they can be off in weight. weigh some on a grain scale and see. i use ffg loose and weigh my loads, 75gr. i also weigh bullets for defects, although i dont weigh sabots.

white hots are supposed to be more consistent pellets in weight and velocity dev. spread. i have yet to test the box i got, but if it will save me from the process i go thru for good groups then ill be switching for good until something else comes along. we'll see.
 
Pellets tend to create more of a "Crud ring" and require more cleaning in the two MLs i've shot them with. But they are SO convenient for reloading in the field. (My loose powder tends to get past the bullets in my reloading tubes, so if I used loose powder I have to keep bullets & powder in seperate containers.)

I'll probably either go back to loose when my stash of pellets run out, or I'll fiddle with loose charges until I find one that shoots to the same point of aim as the pellets. Then I'll use loose for first shot and pellets for followups.
 
I did a fair amount of shooting this summer finding the best load for my Triumph. I shot pinnacle, Pyrodex loose and pellets, and 777 pellets. I finished off a box of pyrodex pellets and opened a new one and there was no difference. I licked a patch and swabbed the barrel after each shot and had no problem loading with any of them. The pellets are easier and work well for me so thats what I am using.
 
Loose powder lends itself to more consistent loads. The key is you have to use te same routine everytime you shoot to get the most consistent loads. I slightly overfill my powder measure and mash it down with my thumb to get it even. I then try to use the same amount of ram rod pressure each time when seating the charge. As long as you have good optics and mounts, you'll get good groups.

I usually shoot pellets just because its so easy. If your pellets were old they can be affected by humidity. You get best accuracy usually with loose powder because you can dial in the perfect load. I figure for deer hunting if you keep a 2 or 3 inch group at a 100 yards you will probably kill what your shooting at.
