11 poults in Benton County, TN. Momma better keep them hidden or she'll be half that in no time.

Even those little pigeon sized "sparrow hawks" WILL KILL BABY TURKEYS.
Actually, they may be the single biggest killer of baby turkeys.

Cooper's hawks & sparrow hawks can observe a hen with newborn poults, and then actually kill every single one, or maybe leave one or two. This typically happens before the poults can fly or fly more than a few yards. These small hawks will just "camp out" wherever the hen goes, and pick off every poult, one by one.

When the poults get larger, they may become too big for sparrow hawks, then too big for Cooper's. Unfortunately, at that point there become really nice meals for owls & red-tails, and other larger raptors, including the bald eagle.

Out in the open, any hen or strutting Tom can be an easy meal for a bald eagle.

I made that post about sparrow hawks from personal observation. I was going to look at a property close to the house here and I rode the 4 wheeler instead of driving and walking. (I bought the property btw) Just up from my house I saw a momma hen and several poults, the 1st I had seen that year. When I came back through a couple hours later a dadblamed sparrow hawk was sitting on top of a fence post with one of those poults in its claws. I HATE THEM THINGS!

I didn't get a picture but my brother and I rode up on a hen with about 10-12 little ones this morning...she was just off the trail in taller grass and I didn't see her until I was about 10' away....she ran off playing hurt and then I saw the poults....we got on past her as quick as we could and she started rounding them back up.

I agree. Why would anyone pick up a poult. This person needs to be educated.
That is just dumb. Freak out a young bird, and hen, so you can get your pic with it. Idiotic.
Educate me ? It was placed back on the nest and the momma came right back.

Pretty much sums up what type of guys you are to resort to name calling very first thing. I'm sure both of you are great outdoorsman.

How about ask some of the other guys who's all held one. Or picked a fawn up to get it out of the road. Or better yet, ask about my character and what type of person I am. @Specializedjon can tell you. @lol can tell you. @Shooter77 has became a great friend and hunting partner from this site. Unfortunately it's comments from guys like you all that run many people off. Used to be a great place to hang out. Unfortunately there is a few now that has to put their 2 cents in and immediately call names just because they think they know it all or disagree with what someone else does, shoots, or catch.

Sounds like you guys need some Jesus in your lives. I'll add you to my prayer list.

Edit to add. Feel free to send me a PM if you'd like. I'll give you my number and we can talk about it, you know, like men. Not behind a screen.

Please do. It's nice for someone to care enough about me to help me with common sense. Would you like the name and number of our game warden here in VA to call. Because he thought it was a pretty cool encounter and good to see poults on the ground.
