Ponds?

Been thinking of adding a pond to my place,nothing big,just something I can gouge out with a skid steer.Sitting in one of my stands the other day,I was looking at a low spot,a realized I had never seen water standing there.Then I realized I never had never seen water standing any where on my place for more than a day or 2.

When I talk to the guy that Im on the lease with,we talk about where we are going to hunt,using "the mud hole" as a land mark.Only one I know of on my 63 acres,and on the 600 acre lease that adjoins it.

So I got to thinking......most of my place is 6 to 10 iches of top soil/dirt.then chirt.I guess this type of geology?? Is not good for holding water?

What would be some options?I was thinking of some type of liner,not real expensive,or maybe even the biggest "scooby doo " pool I can find??

What cha think?

May seem silly,since my land borders the Bufalo,but its a long ,long walk to the river from the ridge tops,seems it would bring deer by,much easier to walk over here,than a mile to the river?

What about scooping it out and adding some bentonite ? Just thinking that sharp little hooves wouldn't punch holes in a layer of clay like they would a sheet of plastic or a plastic pool weathered by the sun.

Bentonite, kitty litter or rubber pond liner about only option i know of unless you can get some clay dirt up there to line the bottom.

It's called sodium bentonite and it's about $11 for a 50-lb bag at the co-op. I have a small area in my back field where we dug dirt out to backfill around the patio and I'm going to work it into the ground so hopefully it will hold water. It's right in the middle of the winter wheat I'm hoping will grow.
