I have planted trees several times over the years using lower end tree shelters....and always disappointed with the results. This past winter I cleared out a few gulleys overgrown with weed trees and invasive vines the deer don't eat, with the intention of re-establishing oaks and fruit trees. I ordered 20 persimmoons, 10 apples, and 20 red oaks. I decided in advance that I would go the full measure has half measures came up empty in the past (I've got a number of oaks doing OK after 5-10 years, but very poor results with fruit trees).
So I ordered a 50 pack of 4 ft shelters from tubex with mats, fertilizer and stakes. I had 10 2' brown plantra shelters left over for some of the oaks.
The trees arrived toward the end of Feb and I planted in early march. I went back this weekend and am very happy so far. All but 2 persimmons have leaved out. To early to tell how the fruit trees will do, but oaks are booming. A good half dozen are already out of the tops of the 4 foot shelters...more than doubled in size in about 2 months. I never had that kind of results with the other shelters....not even close. We'll see how things pan out over the summer.
Because I don't live anywhere near the trees I plant, I can't pamper them, so a dry year can be tough. So far this is a good wet year.
