Anybody shoot powerbelt platinums in 270gr and if so what are your opinions about them. Just bought a new optima i was wanting to try out some new loads. thanks.

I shoot the lighter 223's in my 45 and they perform better than the areotips i use to use. The bullet seems to stay together better, I have one that stayed in the deer and it was about the size of a quarter and did major damage. I am going to try the 300 grain bullets and hope they don't have too much drop.

I shot a doe during the first muzzy season with the 270gr platinums.144 yds broadside droped in her tracks but no exit wound. She looked like a bomb went off inside here.Insides were jelly.No exit wound bothers me but she feel in her tracks.

Well let me make my question more specific. I went to illinois this year and shot a 150" buck at about 175 yards with 100 gr of powder and a 245 gr hollow point. Im almost 100 percent i hit the buck in the front shoulder because when he ran he was favoring the shoulder that i shot and had his tail in between his legs and didnt seem to be running at full potential. looked for about 4 hours never found a drop of blood or the buck. Now im going to start shooting 150 gr of powder and was thinking about upping the grain bullet without giving up to much velocity. something that would take down those northern brusiers.

My suggestion would be to find another bullet and then you will not need to shoot 150g. Most MLs aren't very accurate at that high of a charge anyway.
Get a barnes M/L bullet and shoot whatever grain powder shoots the most accurately with that bullet. Whether it be 80 or 150 grains powder.

any bullet and i mean any bullet is better than any size grain powerbelt. you would be better off getting you some hornaday bullets os some kind. i personally shoot 240 gr XTPs have used 300 gr XTPs with good success ass well. they actually punch holes all the way through the deer. and they cost less than PBs.

Shot a 9 pt and a spike with the 270 gn platinums this year. Spike fell in the tracks. 9 pt staggered 30 yds and fell in sight. No exit wound on either. I used 150 gn of 777. They are accurate (1.5"group@100yds)and hit hard but do not expect an exit wound.

Paboom, I have killed deer with 223 gr platinums out to 200 yards with my 45 caliber cva pushed by 150 gr of 777 pellets. All pass throughs and extremely accruate, shot a 3" group at 200 yards earlier this year.

At 200 yards that sounds about right. If you were to take a 20yrd shot w/that load your results would be vastly different I believe. Most people-especially here in TN don't shoot 200 yards regularly. Most are under 100 yards. And w/a 150g charge and a PB, that's asking for trouble. Again, individual results may vary but this is what I find to be the common results.

That's the same load I shoot in my Encore and have shot several deer at 200 and at 20 to 39 yards. Shot a doe last year at around 25 yards as she was walking towards me. The bullet went in through the chest area and out through her side. Did some major damage to the vitals.paboom said:

I have not had any luck with getting consistancy with powerbelts. By all means give them a shot but also try a good saboted bullet. The 300 and 250 grain hornady xtps have worked well in all the guns me and the friends have tried them in. The xtps can also bought in bulk they are just a 45 cal pistol bullet. Then buy the sabots sepperate.
