Planting seed in low light conditions

Really curious as to what would be a good seed to use in a pretty shaded woods area. It's mostly ridgetops with some decent light peneration.

Looking to have the place ready for a fall plot. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shane

This is a tricky question. It is basically a waste of time and seed if your plot won't get much sun. Plant biomass is tied directly to the amount of sun it gets. If your plots are the only ones around, and they are small (< 1/2 ac.), they won't stand a chance in the shade when the deer find them.

Could you enlarge some of the openings with a chainsaw to let more light in?

I'd stay away from the throw and grow. It's got ryegrass in it. Ryegrass is marginal as deer forage, but outstanding as a weed! Cereal rye would be a better option, or maybe a white clover if the site is not too dry.

Throw and grow is mostly rye grass...not what you want.

Id go with winter wheat towards the end of september. Best shot you got.
