I got my pines in this week and was hoping to plant this weekend. However, the weather looks very cold, with Sunday most of the day being below freezing. Should I wait to plant?
 
I would just wait... are they B&B or bareroot?

If they are b&b just cover them in the hay. if they are bareroot. try to keep the roots damp. and around 40 degrees. they will be fine for several days.
 
I got them from the TN Department of Forestry. I have yet to open the bag they have come in. Should I open and check to make sure the roots are damp or just leave the bag sealed?

Also, Saturday looks like a high of 59 with the cold air coming in Sunday. If I plant on Saturday, will I risk losing the trees with the cold weather on Sunday?
 
You could plant on Saturday, just put some hay on top of the ball when you get them planted. Everything should be fine with them.. I've got loblolly on my sales yard covered in hay.. I'm not worried about them at all.


You say they came in a bag... Are they just seedlings? I've never heard of anybody sending them out in bags.
 
Sorry, I have not been clear. They are seedlings. 500 in a bag. I am afraid that I'll get them planted Saturday and then the cold Sunday will kill them?
 
Oh ok.. since the are seedlings.. just wait until you get several warm days in a row.. plant them, then cover with some straw. Should be ok that way. Did you get a good deal on those?

I was told to plant them within a week, max. Mine had a little water in them and no you don't want them to freeze in the bag. I would think they would be best to plant asap! could be wrong though.
 
Do you have any sand? you can put them in some sand and they will be ok..

I couldn't sell mine for that cheap. You done good on the price..

They need to be in the ground asap. Pine's are tough.. if you have any worries about them. Just plant them now.. But like I said.. cover them in hay.
 
You definitely can't beat the prices. I spoke with a guy from the TN Dept of Forestry today and he recommended I plan all that I can tomorrow and not plant on Sunday. I'll just have to watch my trees and how I store them until I can plant the rest next weekend.
 
Yeah should be fine. I dug some trees this morning.. my backs hurtin me pretty bad. 25 redbuds oklahoma's 2" cal. and 10 white oak 3" .. All hand dug.
 
Yeah I always like to get people to plant stuff in the fall. But early spring is ok as well. I usually don't ship anything after the 2nd week of June.
 
another question..and not trying to hijack your thread jarred525 so I hope you dont mind...the last time I planted any I use a tool that you pushed in the ground dropped in the seedling then pushed the thing in the ground again about 6 inches away from the tree and pull it toward the tree to cover the roots...if memory serves anyhow...is that still how its done on small scale say 500 -1000 trees I know a spade just wasn't strong enough and it beat digging and filling \


basically what is the best way to go about it DIY ...shanehallum do you have a nursery...do yall plant them at what charge..pm me if you like.

Actually, late winter is the best time to plant pines.
 
I think you can get those dibble bars from co-op. I just use a digging spade and drive it straight down and push forward to make a gap... then use a peice of bamboo to keep it straight.

The key to planting is to keep the tap root straight and to do your best to prevent air pockets. Also, if I bottom out on a rock when digging the hole, I look for a another site as close as possible until I dig and do not hit the rock. I have found pines do not do well in rocky soil.

An update. I got about 250 planted on Saturday. Bro had to work so had to do it myself. Feeling it today! Hoping for no drought this year!

Hopefully, will get the rest in next weekend.
