Planting in 5 gallon buckets?

No garden this year but wanting to plant a few tomatoes, peppers, etc. I have too many trees to get sufficient sunlight in a garden spot. I do have the sunlight in portions of my fenced in backyard around the pool. I thought about planting a few plants in 5 gallon buckets. This way I don't have to cut up the back yard. The only downfall I can see might be that the plastic buckets themselves might get hot in the full sun and overheat the root system. Any thoughts?

Shouldn't be a problem. My grandmother has grown tomatoes for as long as i can remember in buckets.

I have several tomatoes and peppers growing in buckets. I had my first grape tomato harvest last week.plants are doing great

I'm growing a few in those reusable grocery store fabric bags. This is my first year trying it; guy at church recommended it. He said they worked great (a) the bags are like 99 cents and (b) the bags breath. So far, everything is growing - we'll see how it goes.

I grow many tomatoe plants in a 5 gallon bucket. Took a PVC pipe and hooked a water hose on a timer, drilled a hole in the PVC where the buckets were and stuck a small black tube in the hole to give water to the plant. Works great for me.
