I have about half an acre along a fence line about 50 yards from my house that I am trying to use as a plot for deer and turkey this fall and winter. It is surrounded by pasture fields with some wooded areas about 100 yards away. It will not be used for hunting, but for wildlife viewing by me and my boys. The turkey are here as I had 22 in my yard a couple of days ago. I planted 50# of buckwheat around Aug 1st(yes I know its the wrong time of year). With the drought, I had about 1/3 of it come up. After two days of rain, it looks like someone waved a magic wand over it as the rest has sprouted. Now I'm in a dilema. Do I disk it over and plant something that will last into the cold months, overseed before a good rain again or just let the buckwheat grow? I'm open for suggetions...

Your at the end on the season for buckwheat. I'd disk and replant. This weekend is the time to getr done.

If you are seeing turkeys now, you might want to think about leaving your buckwheat till it is seeded out completly.. the turkey's and songbirds will love you. You can plant winter wheat after the buckwheat dies in late Sept. Oct. or Nov. and the turkey's will find it again for sure!
I have planted winter wheat in Dec. with good results. It sure makes for a really tender food plot! Just my thoughts.
