Hey guys in previous threads I've talked about planting my fall plots, but after the latest camera pulls, the deer seem to be consistently eating these plants/weeds or whatever it is, this is where I had a fall plot of clover, oats, wheat etc last year. Question is should I mow it all down and plant as planned, or leave a thin strip closest to the stand for bow season? This area was mowed in early summer and the area to the left that's taller was bushhogged last fall. Is this something I planted or a native weed?

I would guess the plants in the foreground to be perilla mint. A little better picture of the plant would help identification.

To answer the rest of your question, I don't believe it to be a preferred forage plant. I would plant food plots as normal. I could be wrong on plant I.D. And others may have observed deer browsing on it more than me.

Sure looks like perilla mint. Have you verified that they are in fact eating this plant and not something else growing underneath? I would suspect they are picking clover leftovers underneath. Perilla mint is highly toxic to ruminants (cattle, horses, deer, etc) and is usually found in areas that have been overgrazed by cattle in the past. Get rid of it.

They very well might be eating whats underneath, and this farm had cattle on it for years, but none in the last 12 or so years. If its mint id imagine itd smell like mint so i will check next time out. Also there is alot of this stuff even where not plotted so you all are probably right.
