I have started to plan another trip to the Yellowstone backcountry for next year. I am taking my son this time and he's over the top happy. We will use an outfitter that takes you out on horses so you can get deeper in the backcountry. You get to fish some incredible water that is tough to access and not very pressured either. I can't wait for him to get this experience. My last trip was just awesome.
 
If you are in extreme back country on Slough Creek you need to be very very aware of the grizzly presence at all times. Outfitter will know the issues but the danger cannot be over emphasized IMO having been there myself many times in the past.

Absolutely. While we didn't run across any back there, I saw claw marks on trees that were over my head even with me on the horse. We went to the back meadow to fish. The only signs of humans we saw back there were a few of the workers from the Silver Tip that were headed out for some supplies.

If you want an easy change of pace one of my favorite places ways to fish is the Lamar River Canyon starting just above the Slough Creek CG road entrance. In the fall it can be absolutely loaded with cuts. I take my small waters spinning gear and a gold bladed PM or rooster tail spinner. Clamber down into the tight pocket water and work about 100 yard stretch, then move the truck up hill and keep working it until it flattens out and opens up toward Soda Butte Creek.

I rarely ever see another fishermen as its not easy to fly fish due to the tightness of the pockets and the rock clambering. Reminds me of fishing the Tellico River as a kid.

I was actually looking at the Lamar for this trip too. The only problem with these kinds of trips is the overwhelming amount of water to fish.

If you can ever catch the timing of stone fly hatch on the Yellowstone it's a hoot. Bugs are like size # 2. Good luck and be safe.
 
We loved the slough creek fishing. We hiked so didn't get as far as you did on horseback, but the fishing was great.

Don't count out a lake or two either for fly fishing. We hit trout lake and Shoshone lake. Shoshone lake was an all day hike but worth it..

The wife and I hiked up Nez Perce creek from just south of the Nez Perce campground. You can park at the Mary Mountain trailhead and go east. There is not much water, but lots of small fish and you will be almost completely alone. Lots of bear and buffalo so be aware .. Also, lots of geysers on this one so be extremely careful.
 
Love fishing in Yellowstone like that and I'm up in Canada right now doing some fishing. About to head back out for some more fishing/hiking. To say the weather has been crazy is an understatement. One day it's pouring rain, next it's sunny, and to top it off it's snowing. I'm in Jasper right now but have been in Yoho,Banff, and Kootenay. Gotta another week here before heading back home.
